The Curriculum
The Prepared Environment
- Practical life the student learns care of the person, of the environment, and of others. They develop a sense of independence, order, stronger coordination and concentration with these activities.
- Sensorial the student refines the senses, sharpens his/her awareness of the surrounding world and develops a strong perceptual ability to discriminate, recognize and compare colors, shapes, sizes textures, and sounds.
- Culture experience in music appreciation, art, science, geography, history and a basic understanding of us as a people are also offered to the child.
- Math the concept of numbers is introduced in a concrete way through manipulation and repetition. Materials range from simple association of quality and symbol to the decimal system and the operation of math.
- Language - the student develops and strengthens vocabulary and self-expression. Communication becomes more natural and meaningful. Using a phonetic approach, most students learn the joy of reading short words even short stories! Writing is encouraged by activities designed to develop small muscles. When the student is ready to read a formal reading program is offered and presented in small reading groups.
- Elementary extensions to the Montessori curriculum for the advanced student involve: daily reinforcement of skills in writing, Whole Language Approach to reading, spelling for First Grade, and formal instruction with Montessori math, science and language workbooks.
